How is a CIN structured — what do the 21 characters mean?

An Indian CIN (Corporate Identification Number) is a 21-character code assigned when a company is registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) in India. It breaks down into a listing status (L for listed, U for unlisted), a 5-digit industry code, a 2-character state code, the 4-digit year of incorporation, a 3-character ownership class, and a 6-digit registration number. The company verification API validates the full 21-character CIN.

Is a CIN the same as a company registration number?

Not exactly. The company registration number is the final 6 digits of the 21-character CIN. The full CIN also encodes the company's listing status, industry, state code, year of incorporation, and ownership class, so it carries more information than the registration number on its own.

What happens if a company has been struck off?

The API returns a company_status such as Struck-off, Inactive, or Dormant, so you can automatically block or flag the entity before onboarding.
